A quiet and safe place for conducting clinical trials

Since its establishment in 2015, the Outpatient Study Centre (Ambulantes Studienzentrum, ASZ) run by the Department of Clinical Research (DKF) and situated on the premises of the University Hospital Basel (USB), has provided a state-of-the-art infrastructure for the conduct of clinical studies. It provides examination rooms, inpatient rooms, laboratory equipment and temperature-controlled storage space. The centre’s spatial separation from regular hospital operations allows researchers and study participants to benefit from discreet and time-efficient procedures. At the same time, its immediate proximity to the University Hospital Basel ensures that emergency medical care is available at all times.

«Collaboration with the ASZ is outstanding – the team is supportive, solution-oriented and the infrastructure is both professional and well-equipped.»

PD Dr. Eleonora Seelig

DKF research group leader, Deputy Chief Physician Endocrinology, Diabetology & Metabolism, University Hospital Basel

«The ASZ provides the perfect setting for our Phase I studies! It offers an excellent infrastructure and support services. Without the ASZ, clinical research would be impossible for us.»

Prof. Matthias Liechti

DKF Research Group Leader, Head of Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology, University Hospital Basel

«The close collaboration with the ASZ is characterised by a high level of professionalism, strong commitment and reliability – from meticulous planning to comprehensive support for the study participants. It is a key partner for the successful implementation of, and ensuring the high academic quality of, our Weed Care study.»

Prof. Marc Walter

19'000

patient visits since 2016

Seven percent of the visits involved overnight stays. Therefore, an average of 140 patient visits are carried out at the ASZ every month. On average, 10 study participants receive inpatient care every month.

353

clinical studies and research projects since 2016

The majority of projects are clinical trials with medicinal products or other clinical trials according to the definition of the Swiss Human Research Act. Nine out of ten projects are investigator-initiated.

43

research groups since 2016

More than half of the research teams having conducted projects at the ASZ are members of DKF research groups. For them, using the ASZ premises and infrastructure is free-of-charge.
